Straight answers on spec, installation and budget.

01 How thick should hybrid flooring be? For most homes — renovation or new build — around 7.5mm is the balanced choice.

Hybrid flooring comes in 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, 8, 9 and even 11mm. Each thickness came from a different period and was made for a different job — so a bigger number isn’t automatically a better floor.

For most family homes, whether you’re renovating or building new, around 7.5mm is the balanced choice: solid and stable underfoot, without adding height you then have to deal with at doorways, skirting and the joins to other rooms.

That’s why it’s the one thickness we stock.

02 How thick should the wear layer be? Thicker isn’t always better. For a family home, 0.5mm is enough.

The wear layer is the clear top layer that protects the timber look underneath. You’ll see 0.3, 0.5, 0.7mm, and even 1mm or more.

Thicker isn’t automatically better. The right choice depends on what the room is used for and how hard it’s used — and you pay for every extra tenth of a millimetre.

Wear layerMade for
0.3mmLight use, low-traffic rooms
0.5mmFamily homes, including kids and pets
0.7mm and upCommercial spaces with constant foot traffic

For a home, 0.5mm is enough. Going thicker means paying for commercial-grade wear you won’t use.

How much extra flooring should I buy? Usually 5–10% more than the floor area. Smaller or more complex rooms need more.

You always need a little more flooring than the area you’re covering. Boards are cut to fit walls, doorways and corners, and not every offcut can be used again. This is called wastage.

For most jobs, wastage sits between 5% and 10%. Where you land depends on the space:

The spaceAllow for
Large, simple rectangular roomsAbout 5%
Smaller rooms, hallways, lots of corners and doorways8–10%
Patterns such as herringbone or chevronMore than 10%

Example: a 30 m² room + 8% = 32.4 m². At 1.7457 m² per box, that’s 18.6 boxes — so you’d order 19.
